We had the pleasure of hosting Jack for a week this Summer. Here he shares his thoughts and reflections…
Why I spent my work experience week at a financial planning firm
Let’s be honest: few people grow up dreaming of being a financial planner. Numbers don’t usually spark excitement. However, having knowledge about pensions, investments, and planning for the future is a life skill that anyone can benefit from. Having also recently graduated from University, I was eager to explore different avenues for my future career. I found out about boosst through Mum, who’s a client (as I am now also), and it seemed like the ideal place to explore these things. boosst welcomed me with open arms, kindly offering me a week of work experience at their company!
My week at boosst
The boosst team delivered an incredibly well-structured, hands-on work experience that touched every aspect of the organisation. Over the course of five days, they offered a complete open-door look into their operations. I sat in on team huddles, was introduced to the software used and shadowed team members throughout the whole business. This ranged from paraplanning and admin implementation to client prep and sitting in on a client meeting
They also took the time to educate me on topics like investment philosophy with Josh, navigating complex pension and tax structures with Nick, and exploring potential career pathways with Gabby and Tom. On top of all that, they welcomed me into their AI Explorers group, allowing me to give my thoughts and insights on their ideas and how to help boosst utilise this ever-advancing technology to improve their business.
It’s not all about the money
Going into the week, I expected to be bombarded with numbers and spreadsheets, and sure, I got a taste of that! I could easily go on and on about salary sacrifice and navigating tricky tax codes. While these concepts may sound dry, once I saw them in action and their tangible impact on real human lives, it became incredibly engaging.
The biggest takeaway from my time at boosst was that its main focus isn’t profit, but people. Money is simply the tool and life is the goal. boosst works to give clients the clarity and confidence to make big life decisions, enjoy their hard-earned wealth, and live the lives they actually want before it’s too late. They put a level of genuine heart into their work that I haven’t seen anywhere else. They routinely go above and beyond for their clients, prioritising the best long-term outcome for clients over their own bottom line.
Seeing a firm operate with that level of integrity made me feel a level of passion for this type of career I never thought I could have.
Looking ahead
I’m leaving my time at boosst with a renewed sense of direction and purpose for my future. Learning about different development routes has given me a clear roadmap, which I did not have before coming here. My immediate next step is to dive headfirst into starting my CII qualification as I begin the journey toward becoming a qualified planner. A massive thank you to Jennie for organising my week and the entire boosst team for being so welcoming, giving up their precious time to help me have the best experience possible. I have enjoyed every second, and what I have gained is invaluable.
Thank you boosst!
Jack
