Against the backdrop of war, humanitarian crisis, and economic hardship, it\u2019s natural to wonder what effect these world events will have on your long-term investment performance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">While these challenges certainly warrant our attention and deep concern, they don\u2019t have to be a reason to panic about markets when you\u2019re focused on long-term investing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #db409a;\">Imagine it\u2019s 25 years ago:<\/span><\/h5>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">J.K. Rowling just published the first Harry Potter book.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">General Motors is releasing the EV1, an electric car with a range of 60 miles.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">The internet is in its infancy, Y2K looms, and everyone is worried about the Russian financial crisis.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">You&#8217;ve popped in to WHSmith and find yourself drawn to the bright yellow cover of Wired magazine. You pick up the freshly printed July 1997 edition and read the spotlight article; a prediction of the upcoming twenty five years. The predictions in 1997 included:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">An uncontrollable plague &#8211; a modern day influenza epidemic or it&#8217;s equivalent takes off like wildfire.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Energy prices go through the roof. Issues with oil supply and alternative energy sources fail to materialise.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">China will continue its economic progress and tensions will rise with USA<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Russia to develop into a kleptocracy run by mafia, or retreat into nationalism, which subsequently threatens Europe.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Europe&#8217;s integration process grinds to a halt.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Major ecological crisis causes a global climate change that, among other things, disrupts food supply &#8211; causing big price increases.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Major crime and terrorism rises cause global fear and concern.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">A social and cultural backlash stops progress dead in its tracks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Now imagine that a stranger sees you buying the magazine and steps in with some quiet words. It transpires the stranger is from the future. You no longer need to rely on the predictions, you have facts. The stranger tells you what will happen over the course of the next 25 years. <strong>Here are the important questions:<\/strong> Would you invest in the stock market knowing the following events were going to happen? And could you stay invested?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Asian contagion <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Russian default <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Tech collapse <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">9\/11<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Stocks\u2019 \u201clost decade\u201d <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Great Recession <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Global pandemic <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Second Russian default<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">With everything the stranger told you, what would you have done? Gotten into the market? Gotten out? Increased your equity holdings? Decreased them?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h5><span style=\"color: #db409a;\">Well, let\u2019s look at what happened:<\/span><\/h5>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Everything the stranger told you was true.<\/li>\r\n<li>Quite incredibly, most of the magazine&#8217;s predictions were accurate too!<\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">From January of 1997 to December of 2021, the US stock market (the largest globally) returned, on average, 9.8% a year <span style=\"color: #02bad8;\">(1)<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">A pound invested at the beginning of the period would be worth about \u00a39 at the end of the period <span style=\"color: #02bad8;\">(2)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #02bad8;\"><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">These returns are very much in line with what returns have been over the past 100 years of stock market history.<\/span> How can that be? <span style=\"color: #db409a;\">The market is doing its job. It\u2019s science.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n<h4><em><span style=\"color: #db409a;\">&#8220;Investing in markets is uncertain. The role of markets is to price in that uncertainty.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h4>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">The stranger told you about all of the negative surprises over the past 25 years, but there were a lot of positive ones as well. The net result was a stock market return that seems very reasonable, even generous. <strong>It\u2019s a tribute to human ingenuity that when negative forces pop up, people and companies respond and mobilize to get things back on track.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">Human ingenuity created incredible innovations over the past 25 years. Plenty of things went wrong, but plenty of things went right. There\u2019s always opportunity out there. Think about how different life is from the way it was in 1997: the way we work, the way we communicate, the way we live. For example, the gross domestic product of the US in 1997 was $8.6 trillion and grew to $23 trillion by the end of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">We are eternal optimists, because we believe in people. We have an unshakable faith in human beings\u2019 ability to deal with tough times. In 1997, few would have forecast a nearly 10% average return for the stock market. But that remarkable return was available to anyone who could open an investment account, buy a broad-market portfolio, and let the market do its job.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\"><strong>Investing in the stock market is always uncertain.<\/strong> Uncertainty never goes away. If it did, there wouldn\u2019t be a stock market. It\u2019s because of uncertainty that we have a positive premium when investing in stocks compared to relatively riskless assets like cash. Reaping the benefits of the stock market requires being a long-term investor.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">By investing in a market portfolio, you\u2019re not trying to figure out which specific companies are going to thrive, and which aren\u2019t going to be able to recover. You\u2019re betting on human ingenuity to solve problems.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\r\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\r\n<div class=\"column\">\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b2155;\">The pandemic was a big blow to the economy. But people, companies and markets adapt. That\u2019s our worldview. Whatever the next blow we face, we have faith that we will meet the challenge in ways we can\u2019t forecast.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #db409a;\">At boosst we will never try to predict what might happen in the next 25 years like Wired magazine. And we certainly won&#8217;t pretend to know the future &#8211; like the stranger. But we do believe the best investment strategy going forward is to keep in mind the lesson learned from that stranger back in 1997: don\u2019t panic.
