Sleeping Beauty on the other hand would awake from her slumbers and wonder what the worry was all about.

Keith, Vicki and I often see this contrast at annual planning meetings with clients. We all work with a handful of clients who frequently review their investments throughout the year and tend to spend the year in a state of apprehension. On the other hand, there are the others who do not look at all throughout the year and look forward to finding out how their portfolio has performed at their planning meetings. Neither of these options is ‘right’ – but those who look less (or not at all!) tend to be happier and have less money worries. Interestingly; this isn’t a ‘wealth’ thing either – it isn’t the case that wealthier clients who can more comfortably suffer short-term losses are less phased by market movements – we work with clients across the wealth spectrum who take both views. We strongly encourage our clients to take Sleeping Beauty’s approach – which is made easier with the trust that boosst are taking care of their portfolio and have complete oversight throughout the year.

The benefits of working with boosst and learning to trust the process becomes evident over time; as even the most apprehensive clients tend to look less and less after 2-3 years of working with us.

“It doesn’t grow any faster if you stare at it”

But back to Sleeping Beauty… take a look at the different outcomes that she might have experienced depending on how long she had been asleep for, in the table below:

Time asleep

1 year

3 yrs

5yrs

10 yrs

20 yrs

30 yrs

40 yrs

Cumulative return

10%

25%

68%

138%

96%

525%

1,333%

Sleeping Beauty’s slumbers – cumulative returns, after inflation to 30-12-2020
Data: MSCI World Index in GBP adjusted for UK RPI.

As investors, we should take a similar approach to looking at our assets, reminding ourselves that time and compounding are our friends. Yet it is understandable that many investors still feel a bit nervous about the future, not least in the shorter-term with the recent literal assault on US democracy and the escalating pandemic. Listening to the news can be depressing as well as somewhat repetitive.

Many of the more positive stories are often lost in the gloom. Remember that it is always darkest just before dawn. To redress the balance, here are five positive insights for 2021 and beyond.

First, and most obviously, the scientific community has done a remarkable job delivering the world with a suite of vaccines that provide a way out of the pandemic. The UK has played a leading role, not only in vaccine development, but also identifying existing drugs that are, and will, have a major impact on treating patients including dexamethasone, tocilizumab and sarilumab (not easy to pronounce!). A new double-blind trial is also underway in the UK looking at interferon beta, which initial indications show could dramatically reduce the risk of serious disease, which could – alongside the vaccines – be a game changer for managing Covid over time (LINK).
